Scale Remediation Using Sonication: Pre-Commercial Test Project Final Report
The final report for the 2005 project, Scale Remediation Using Sonication: Pre-Commercial Test Project (Tech Savants) is posted in the member's only section of the GSTC website. The objectives of the project were to develop preliminary operating, performance, and cost data to quantify the use of sonication technology for well-scale remediation and to expand the base of geological settings where the technology had been applied and evaluate. The sonication technology was applied to a total of twelve wells located within four distinctly different storage field geologic environments found in Illinois, Michigan, and California.
The industry partners were Ameren Corporation, the Southern California Gas Company, Consumers Energy, and Nicor Gas.
Brine String Integrity-Case History Survey and Model Evaluation final report
The final report for the 2006 project, Brine String Integrity-Case History Survey and Model Evaluation (PB Energy Storage Services) is posted in the member's only section of the GSTC website. The objective of the project was to better define the causes of brine string failure and failure mitigation technologies. The project (1) compiled case histories of successful bring string installations as well as brine string failure in solution mining, liquid hydrocarbon storage, and gas cavern dewatering; (2) evaluated case histories with models proposed in the literature for brine strings that have not failed as well as brine strings that have experienced failure; and developed recommendations for maximizing brine string integrity.
Evaluation of Magnetic Pulse Welding (MPW) for Improved Casing Repair final report (2007)
The final report for the 2007 project, Evaluation of Magnetic Pulse Welding (MPW) for Improved Casing Repair final report (Edison Welding Institute) is posted in the member's only section of the GSTC website. The project was an effort to determine the feasibility of expansion mode magnetic pulse welding to affect improved casing repair. Finite element modeling (FEM) was used to develop the expansion welding coil system and to simulate its performance. One coil system was designed; two coil systems were fabricated and experimentally evaluated.
Penetration Power of Ultrasonic Guided Waves for Piping and Well Casing Integrity Analysis final report
The Penetration Power of Ultrasonic Guided Waves for Piping and Well Casing Integrity Analysis final report by the Pennsylvania State University is posted in the member's only section of the GSTC website. In this 2007 project, a two-piece down hole sensor was designed and tested in a steel well casing. The sensor has great potential for mechanical integrity evaluation of well casings that may exhibit cracks or wall thinning from corrosion.
Platt 7th Annual Gas Storage Outlook, January 15-16, 2009
The Platts 7th Annual Gas Storage Outlook will be January 15-16, 2009 at the Westin Galleria Hotel, Houston , TX. The meeting will provide a forum for gas storage operators/developers/producers, gas customers, and gas storage investors to discuss the ever-changing storage sector dynamics in North America. Register by December 5, 2008 to save $300. For the latest agenda information and to register, please visit: www.events.platts.com or call 866-355-2930.
Executive Council Nominations
The GSTC is soliciting members who are interested in serving on the Executive Council. The GSTC will be electing 4 members to serve on the GSTC Executive Council for a two-year term (2009-2010). Full members are encouraged to apply for these positions. The Council's responsibilities include attending a 2-day proposal meeting to review and select proposals for GSTC funding, to participate, either in person or via teleconference, in other Council meetings at various locations throughout the year and are encouraged to serve on Ad hoc committees to steer the GSTC research projects. The election form will be distributed in mid November. The Consortium will compile a list of those who wish to serve and submit the list to the membership for a formal vote. The election results will be announced in January 2009.
We would like to express a special thank you to the following 2007-2008 Council members:
- Gregory Theirl, Dominion Delivery
- Todd Thomas, NW Natural Gas
- Jim Mansdorfer, Southern California Gas
- George Hodges, Southern Union
Another special thank you those who will continue to serve until the end of 2009:
- Larry Kennedy, El Paso
- Brian Hall, Equitable Resources
- Ray Harris, National Fuel
- Steve Bergin, ONEOK, Inc.
- John Jackson, Spectra Energy

2008 GSTC Fall Meeting, Washington DC
(October 21-22, 2008)
The GSTC 2008 Fall Meeting was held at the Embassy Suites Washington, Washington DC on October 21-22, 2008. The meeting included new funding requests from ten projects, a special presentation by Mr. Michael Schaal, Director of the Energy Information Association's Oil and Gas Division, Office of Integrated Analysis and Forecasting, as well as technology updates from co-funded projects. The Executive Council meet immediately following the general meeting to select projects to go forward.
