Song appointed Associate Director of Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment

University Park , Pa. – Dr. Chunshan Song, professor of fuel science in the department of energy and mineral engineering and director of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences’ ( EMS) Energy Institute, has been appointed associate director of the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment, effective immediately. He joins Director Tom Richard and Associate Director Brian Dempsey, adding his deep knowledge in energy systems to the PSIEE management team.

Song’s research interests include clean energy and catalytic fuel processing; adsorption desulfurization for ultra-clean fuels; reforming of hydrocarbons and bio-fuels for fuel cells; shape-selective catalysis for chemicals synthesis; CO2 capture and utilization; heavy oil upgrading; and conversion of coal and biomass to transportation fuels, chemicals and materials.

Song is well known internationally for innovative research in the areas of clean fuels and catalysis. He has authored more than 140 refereed journal articles, 22 book chapters, and 250 conference papers; holds 16 patents; and has edited 14 books and special issues of journals. He has delivered more than 35 plenary or keynote lectures at international and national conferences, and given 150 invited lectures worldwide.

He has served on various University committees including the University-wide Energy Task Force and the Coordinating Council of the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment. He also has served on various committees in EMS and chaired several departmental Faculty Search Committees and Tenure and Promotion committees. He served as associate director of the Hydrogen Energy Center during 2003-2007 and is currently the leader of the Clean Fuels and Catalysis Program at the EMS Energy Institute. He most recently led the technical efforts of faculty in several colleges and researchers in the EMS Energy Institute in developing the Penn State-Chevron Alliance that was announced in October 2007; through the alliance Chevron will provide up to $17.5 million over five years for collaborative research at Penn State.

Song holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Dalian University of Technology in Dalian, China, and a master's degree and doctoral degree in applied chemistry from Osaka University in Japan. He worked for the Research Center of Osaka Gas Company before joining Penn State in 1989 as a research associate. In 1994 he was appointed assistant professor of fuel science and was subsequently promoted to associate professor in 1997 and to full professor in 2003.
