Freshman Award Winners with Sharon Miller

The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences recently held its 2014 undergraduate poster exhibition. The exhibition is organized by the Ryan Family Student Center and showcases the variety of research among undergraduate students in the College’s five departments.

As part of this event, Phi Kappa Phi, a national honors society housed at the EMS Energy Institute, sponsored the Phi Kappa Phi Freshman Achievement Award. Sharon Miller, senior research associate at the EMS Energy Institute, is the current president for the Penn State Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society.

This award went to Victoria Christensen and Tanner Mengle for their poster, “Providing Access to Clean Water with Materials Science.” Christensen is a freshman in Materials Science and Engineering. She is is also an undergraduate research fellow in the Materials Science Department researching nanofiber membranes for their application in water filtration. Mengle is an undergraduate studying in the field of Materials Science and Engineering.
