Internet fiber optics could provide valuable insight into geological phenomena

Fiber-optic cables run underneath nearly all city grids across the United States and provide internet and cable TV to millions, but what if those systems could also provide valuable information related to hazardous events such as earthquakes and flooding? A team of researchers at Penn State have found they can do just that.

EMS Energy Institute – Wage Payroll New Hire Process

  1. A faculty member completes the online Wage Payroll New Hire online form that will be sent to Jennifer McKenrick to submit for approval and start the hiring process.
  2. Once the job posting is active, Jennifer will provide the prospect and the PI with the online job posting number that he/she must apply to in order to be hired.
  3. Once the prospect applies online, Jennifer will submit the request to hire through Workday.
  4. At that point, HR Shared Services will generate the offer letter and initiate the onboarding process via email to the prospect, including a background check and instructions on completing all necessary financial paperwork.
  5. Additional paperwork may be sent to the new employee related to specific items pertaining to working with the EMS Energy Institute, including the completion of safety and compliance trainings.
  6. After all onboarding processes are complete, HR Shared Services will send an email authorizing the new employee to begin logging working hours. 

NOTE – Background checks and all required new-hire documentation MUST be completed PRIOR to logging any working hours.

Lo Prete receives NSF CAREER award to investigate capacity adequacy options

Chiara Lo Prete, associate professor of energy economics in Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, received a Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation to investigate electricity market structures to provide efficient incentives for generation capacity investment under increasing renewable penetration.
