Penn State Energy Day agenda and presentations available online [1]
December 17 - Energy research at Penn State was the focus of a daylong series of presentations by University faculty along with government and industry representatives at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 19. The event was sponsored by the U.S. Energy Association, which represents public and private energy-related organizations, corporations and government agencies.

EI faculty, staff, students receive recognition [2]
December 16, 2010 - The EMS Energy Institute held its 2010 Celebration of Accomplishments banquet on Friday, December 10, 2010. Several faculty, staff and students received awards for their achievements and service to the Institute.

Vander Wal's work contributed to NASA Group Achievement Award [3]
November 18 - Randy Vander Wal, associate professor in energy and mineral engineering, and his team supported the AAFEX field campaign studying alternative fuels and recently presented some of this work at the American Chemical Society National Fall Meeting.

Boehman talks to WTAJ about ethanol blend fuel [4]
November 11, 2010 - Andre Boehman, professor of fuel science, talks to WTAJ about the problems with using the EPA approved E-15, a 15 percent blend of ethanol in gasoline, to fuel cars and other small engines.

ConocoPhillips, Penn State award Energy Prize to rural cogeneration [5]
October 19, 2010 - Electricity and hot water for remote, off-the-grid health clinics and schools is the focus of the "Small Scale Solar Organic Rankine Cycle for Rural Cogeneration" project that is the winner of the 2010 ConocoPhillips Energy Prize, awarded by ConocoPhillips and Penn State.

October 13, 2010 - A recent article by Seth Blumsack, assistant professor of energy policy and economics, entitled, "Do topological models provide good information about electricity infrastructure vulnerability?" is generating online buzz.

Vander Wal's ACS Presentation Recorded and Published Onlin [8]e [9]
October 6, 2010 - Vander Wal’s presentation was chosen to be recorded and published on the ACS Web site.

Karpyn awarded Wood Fellowship [10]
September 17, 2010 - Professor Zuleima Karpyn has been selected as the Quentin E. and Louise L. Wood University Endowed Fellow in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering.

Earth and Mineral Sciences' summer experience program sees success [11]
August 5, 2010 - The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) conducted the Summer Experience in the Earth and Mineral Sciences (SEEMS) program from June 15-21.

Randy Vander Wal's Work in NASA Tech Briefs [12]
July 30, 2010 - Randy Vander Wal, associate professor, Energy and Mineral Engineering, recently had his work highlighted in the July edition of NASA Tech Briefs. The article, Processing Nanostructured Sensors Using Microfabrication Techniques, details the outcome of a three-year project, in which researchers developed a new approach to the fabrication of microsensors with nanostructures.

Chunshan Song Elected to the 2010 Class of ACS Fellows [13]
July 26, 2010 - Chunshan Song, distinguished professor of fuel science in the Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering and director of EMS Energy Institute at Pennsylvania State University, has been elected to the 2010 class of Fellows of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

EMS Energy Institute Researchers Granted Patent [14]
July 21, 2010 - The patent, titled Oxidatively Regenerable Adsorbents for Sulfur Removal, is shared by Chunshan Song, distinguished professor of fuel science; Xiaoliang Ma, senior research associate; Fuxia Sun, postdoctoral research associate; and former graduate student Shingo Watanabe.

Harold Schobert Elected to the 2010 Class of ACS Fellows [15]
July 14, 2010 - Harold Schobert, professor of fuel science in the Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering and leading researcher in fuel chemistry in the EMS Energy Institute, has been elected to the 2010 class of Fellows of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Chunshan Song Wins the 2010 Henry H. Storch Award in Fuel Chemistry from ACS [19]
April 15, 2010 - Chunshan Song, distinguished professor of fuel science in the Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering and Director of EMS Energy Institute at Penn State, was selected to receive the Henry H. Storch Award in Fuel Chemistry at the American Chemical Society (ACS) Spring 2010 national meeting held in March 2010.

April 15, 2010 - Angela Lueking, associate professor in energy and mineral engineering, is part of a team awarded a $2.85 Million Grant for K-12 education.

April 7, 2010 - Demian Saffer, assistant professor, Geosciences, and several other researchers were recently interviewed for a mainstream science show broadcast in Australia.

André Boehman to Receive Award for Outstanding Technical Paper [24]
April 1, 2010 - André Boehman, professor of fuel science, has been chosen to receive the 2009 SAE John Johnson Award for Outstanding Research in Diesel Engines in recognition of a paper he co-authored, “An Experimental Investigation of the Origin of Increased NOx Emissions when Fueling a Heavy-Duty Compression-Ignition Engine with Soy Biodiesel.”
