Burgess Clifford and Song Contribute Chapter for New Book 
November 28, 2011 - Caroline Burgess Clifford, senior research associate, EMS Energy Institute, wrote the chapter on direct liquefaction for the recently published book, Advances in Clean Hydrogen Fuel Processing Science and Technology.

Local Section of American Institute of Chemical Engineers Visits Institute 
November 17, 2011 - On November 16, members from the central Pennsylvania section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers toured the EMS Energy Institute as part of their November meeting. The tour provided an opportunity for the Institute to showcase its research and facilities to students and professionals in the chemical engineering field.
Cost of Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards in Pennsylvania Report Released 
November 14, 2011 - Penn State research scholars Seth Blumsack, assistant professor of energy policy and economics, Andrew N. Kleit, professor of energy and environmental economics, and Babatunde Idrisu, graduate student in Energy and Mineral Engineering, have released a study examining the costs associated with Pennsylvania's Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard.
Gas Flooding Joint Industry Project Holds Successful Meeting in Denver 
November 14, 2011 - The Gas Flooding Joint Industry Project held it’s sixth annual meeting in Denver, CO on November 2 – 3, 2011. This meeting is the first since Russell Johns, project director and professor of petroleum and natural gas engineering, brought the Gas Flooding Initiative to Penn State.
André Boehman named SAE International Fellow 
October 28, 2011 - André Boehman, professor of fuel science and materials science and engineering, has been elected as a 2011 International Fellow by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
ConocoPhillips, Penn State Energy Prize for airborne wind turbines 
October 26, 2011 - Wind turbines that float hundreds of feet above the ground or sea and are deployable in 24 hours are the focus of the "Aerostat Platform for Rapid Deployment Airborne Wind Turbine" project that is the winner of the 2011 ConocoPhillips Energy Prize, awarded by ConocoPhillips and Penn State.
Penn State Managed Consortium Highlighted in Fossil Energy Today 
October 17, 2011 - The most recent issue of Fossil Energy Today, a newsletter produced by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), discussed the new technologies that have resulted from the Stripper Well Consortium (SWC). These technologies, many of which have been commercialized, improve environmental protection while helping independent oil and gas operators.
Rep. Glenn Thompson Visits EMS Energy Institute 
October 11, 2011 - U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson spent the morning at the EMS Energy Institute. Penn State faculty and representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) were part of a briefing that highlighted NETL’s Regional University Alliance and current research initiatives, especially in the area of fossil energy.

September 22, 2011 - Enette Louw and Fidel Castro-Marcano, graduate students in the John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering, were recognized at the 28th Annual International Pittsburgh Coal Conference on September 12 – 15, 2011.
Chunshan Song recognized by the Catalysis Club of Philadelphia 
September 22, 2011 - The Catalysis Club of Philadelphia selected Dr. Chunshan Song, director or the EMS Energy Institute and distinguished professor of fuel science, as the recipient of the 2011 Excellence in Catalysis Award.
Bembenic and Clifford to Receive R. A. Glenn Award for Best Paper 
August 2, 2011 - Meredith Hill Bembenic, a graduate student in the John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering, and Caroline Burgess Clifford, senior research associate, EMS Energy Institute, were selected to receive the R. A. Glenn Award for best paper from the American Chemical Society (ACS) Fuel Chemistry Division.
Blumsack named Ryan Faculty Fellow 
July 13, 2011 - Seth Blumsack, assistant professor of energy policy and economics in the John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering, was named a Ryan Faculty Fellow.
Pennsylvania Biomass Energy Association Holds First Meeting 
July 20, 2011 - On Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Biomass Energy Association (PBEA) held its first meeting. The goal of the meeting, which had over 50 attendees, was to introduce potential members to PBEA, formalize the organizational framework and strategic plan, and outline steps for moving forward.
Partnership formed to find alternative uses for Marcellus Shale gas 
July 5, 2011 - A new industry-led initiative to promote in-state use of Marcellus Shale natural gas by developing a system to recover waste heat from electricity was announced June 30 at the Natural Gas Utilization Workshop at Penn State.
Dr. Harold Schobert, Professor of Fuel Science, Retires 
July 7, 2011 - Dr. Harold Schobert, Professor of Fuel Science in the John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering and leading researcher in fuel chemistry in the EMS Energy Institute, has retired from Penn State after twenty-five years. His retirement was effective June 30, 2011.

June 7, 2011 - Today, Yongsheng Chen, assistant professor of energy and mineral engineering, uses techniques based on that seminal paper to identify the chemical state and local atomic structure of atoms up and down the periodic table.

June 3, 2011 - Dr. Xiaoliang Ma, senior research associate at the EMS Energy Institute, has accepted an offer to lead a refinery research program at Kuwait Institute of Scientific Research, as a program manager.

April 29, 2011 - Chunshan Song, distinguished professor of fuel science in the John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering and director of the EMS Energy Institute in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State has been selected to receive the 2011 Distinguished Researcher Award from the Petroleum Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

André Boehman to be honored with Colwell Merit Award 
March 17, 2011 - André Boehman, professor of fuel science and materials science and engineering, has been selected to receive the 2009 Arch T. Colwell Merit Award in recognition of a technical paper he co-authored, "An Experimental Investigation of the Origin of Increased NOx Emissions when Fueling a Heavy-Duty Compression-Ignition Engine with Soy Biodiesel."
New process cleanly extracts oil from tar sands and fouled beaches 
March 17, 2011 - A new, more environmentally friendly method of separating oil from tar sands has been developed by a team of researchers at Penn State. This method, which utilizes ionic liquids to separate the heavy viscous oil from sand, also is capable of cleaning oil spills from beaches and separating oil from drill cuttings, the solid particles that must be removed from drilling fluids in oil and gas wells.
