The EMS Energy Institute is a leading research and development organization focused on energy science and engineering.

Turgay Ertekin named new head of energy and mineral engineering department

Turgay Ertekin has been named the new head of the John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering (EME) at Penn State, effective July 1.

Ertekin is a professor of petroleum and natural gas engineering and holds the George E. Trimble Chair in Earth and Mineral Sciences. He also serves as a co-director of the newly formed Penn State Institute for Natural Gas Research.

Former Institute Student Secures NSF Fellowship

Laura Bradley, an alumnus of Penn State and the EMS Energy Institute recently received The National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship Award. Bradley is working on her PhD at the University of Southern California. Her work focuses on vapor phase polymer deposition on liquid substrates.

Bradley spent time as an undergraduate working at the EMS Energy Institute. During that time, her paper, The Effect of Fuel Composition on Pyrolysis Kinetics, received a Best Student Paper Award at the 2009 Clearwater Coal Conference.

Three EMS Energy Institute researchers attended a National Science Foundation (NSF) conference on May 14, in Baltimore, to present their work with ionic liquids. The work is funded through NSF’s Accelerating Innovation Research (AIR) program. The conference provided an opportunity for researchers to present to industry representatives and showcase these commercial-ready technologies.

EMS Energy Institute Acquires Argonne Coal Sample Bank

The EMS Energy Institute recently acquired the Argonne Premium Coal Sample Bank (APC), one of the most extensively used sample banks in the world. Last week, the coals were physically moved to the Institute where they will now be housed and available to researchers, which required moving thousands of samples, and large shelving units. This acquisition complements the Penn State Coal Sample Bank and Database already housed at the Institute.

CQI Hosts Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day Event to Teach Kids About X-Ray Imaging

In conjunction with Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day events at Penn State, the Center for Quantitative Imagine (CQI) at the EMS Energy Institute hosted a workshop for young visitors. The event was intended to expose young students to imaging technologies and careers associated with imagine research, including oil and gas engineering, anthropology, soil sciences, civil engineering, and geosciences.

Energy Institute Welcomes Interim Director

Zuleima Karpyn, associate professor and Quentin E. and Louise L. Wood Faculty Fellow in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering will serve as the interim director of the EMS Energy Institute for one year while Director Chunshan Song is on sabbatical leave. Dean Easterling, College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, announced that Dr. Karpyn’s appointment will officially begin July 1, 2013.

Two students receive Peter T. Luckie Award at Undergraduate Exhibition

Two students received the Peter T. Luckie Undergraduate Research Award as part of the 2013 Undergraduate Research Exhibition. Jordanna Lemba received the award for excellence in research in behavioral and social science, and Breecher Hartley Watson received the award for excellence in research in engineering and physical science. These students were joined by 170 entries from undergraduate students from all Penn State campuses.

Angela Lueking Receives Marie Curie Fellowship for Research in Greece

Last year Professor Angela Lueking was awarded a highly competitive Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship to partner with researchers at the University of Crete to study basics of hydrogen adsorption and diffusion on surfaces. The Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship is open to top non-European researchers to work on projects in Europe. The fellowship helps to develop research cooperation between Europe and other parts of the world.

International Conference on Coal Science and Technology Registration Opens

Registration for the International Conference on Coal Science and Technology is now open. Visit our website to register. ICCS&T will be held from September 30 - October 3, 2013. The conference has received over 300 submissions for the technical program from researchers in more than 27 countries. Registration cost are $600/Regular and $300/student if you register by July 31.
