Example GC/MS Analysis (GROB Test Mix)

Mass Spectrometric detection is a common means for identifying peaks in a gas chromatograms. Shown at right is an example of a GC/MS chromatogram for a GROB standard test mixture. The mass spectrum for 2,6-dimethylaniline is shown below the chromatogram as an example. Peaks in the mass spectrum are representative of fragments from the parent compound induced by the instrument during detection. Every compound gives a unique mass spectrum, thus allowing for structural assignments to be made.

GROB Test Mix
The Grob Test Mix is a commercially available column and system evaluation standard. The column used was an XTi-5 from Restek. Exactly 1.0 microliter was injected.
