Reflectance Distribution For Three Ranks of Coals

The Leitz Orthoplan MPV2 Research Microscope with computer-interfaced photometric capability for quantitative measurement of reflected white-light or the measurement of fluorescence emission intensity from blue- or ultaviolet-light illumination using oil immersion or air objectives at 250X, 500X, 625X or 1250X magnification. The example to the right shows the difference in maturity of coals of different ASTM rank. The mean value of each distribution is repeatable to 0.02% and allows for a precise means of characterizing coals or other carbonaceous materials.

Reflectance Distribution
Samples were prepared according to ASTM method D2797. Approximately 50 grams of -20 mesh coal was used for each analysis. Details of reflectance measurements can be found in Davis, 1978.
