Example Gas Analyses (TCD Detection)

The Perkin Elmer Autosystem GC is used for analyzing gaseous samples. Two methods of detection are used. They are (1) flame ionization detection (FID) and (2) thermal conductivity detection (TD). The FID detector is used mainly for light hydrocarbon analyses where the TCD detector can be used to analyze non-combustable compounds, such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Shown to the right is an example chromatogram collected for a commercially available gas mixture. Note the considerably lower response factor observed for hydrogen.

TCD Detection
Commercially available gas standard containing carbon dioxide (5.00% by mole), carbon monoxide (5.00%), hydrogen (3.99%), methane (4.00%) and oxygen (5.02%). Injection was 400 microliters.
