For the second year Penn State University Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society cosponsored the TEDxPSU event held on March 2 at University Park. The theme of this year's TEDxPSU was "Go Further." The event was held in Schwab Auditorium and talks were streamed live to the auditorium in the HUB Student Center. Talks will be posted soon on the TEDxPSU website.

The EMS Energy Institute maintains a suite of chromatography and spectroscopy instrumentation available to any faculty or student at the University who has a research need. The Analytical Research Group at the Institute oversees the maintenance, scheduling, and use of the equipment and provides free customized training to investigators and research groups.

The 4th IEA Clean Coal Center Workshop on Cofiring Biomass with Coal will be held on the Penn State Campus at the Nittany Lion Inn on November 5-6, 2014. The call for abstracts is open and submissions must be received by April 30, 2014. All abstracts must be submitted through the workshop website.

The Unconventional Natural Resources Consortium (UNRC) held its second technical meeting on November 4 at the EMS Energy Institute. Representatives from five companies, including member companies Hess, Chevron, and Shell as well as Penn State faculty and students were in attendance.

Institute Hosts International Coal Conference

The EMS Energy Institute organized the Fourteenth International Conference on Coal Science and Technology (ICCS&T), held from September 29-October 3, in State College, PA. Jonathan Mathews, associate professor of energy and mineral engineering, and program director for the Institute’s coal science and technology program, chaired the conference, which attracted over 220 participants from 29 countries.

High School Students Experience Research at the EMS Energy Institute

The EMS Energy Institute hosted two high school students for the Summer Experience in Earth and Mineral Sciences (SEEMS) as part of our student outreach efforts. Amber Hall and Valeria Pena spent six weeks on Penn State’s University Park Campus conducting hands-on research at the EMS Energy Institute. During the program, students attend classes, conduct a research experiment, write a research paper, and present their results to other participants, advisors and judges. On July 23 the students presented their research project as part of the program’s culmination.
